Eco-powered prize at Terrington
PUPILS at St Clement's High School are getting to grips with a new wind-powered computer.
The school, in Churchgate Way, Terrington St Clement, was among 100 schools and colleges across the UK to win the special equipment in a competition run by computer company RM.
Judges were impressed with the school's plan to use the equipment to teach the importance of energy conservation and lead by example in school and in the community.
The environmentally-friendly kit, which includes a wind turbine large enough to power it, uses up to 66 per cent less energy than standard desktop PCs and a typical secondary school with 220 computers running for most of the day could save up to 9,000 on their fuel bill in three years.
Mr Tim Pearson, chief executive at RM, said: "As places of learning, I am heartened that schools lead by example in teaching students about the threat of climate change and how to tackle it.
"We are delighted to be able to offer the opportunity for the next generation to learn about renewable energy. After all, they are the ones who will ultimately be responsible for halting climate change before it is too late."
