Elderly guests enjoy Xmas dinner at Fakenham
SIXTY elderly guests enjoyed a traditional Christmas dinner thanks to an invitation to share some festive fun with Fakenham College students.
It was a first for the college and was so successful that organisers are already thinking of something similar at Easter. The visitors came from local residential or sheltered homes, or belonged to clubs for the elderly.
Catering manager Julie Upton, whose team of cooks were rated the best in the region earlier this year, thought up the idea and student support officer Belinda Ladds helped get it off the ground. They were supported on the day by deputy head Jacquie Waring and her food technology and health and social care students who served the guests, sat and chatted with them, sang carols and held a raffle.
Mrs Muriel White , a member of the Hamatuna Club in Hempton, was very impressed. "It couldn't have been better," she said. "The meal was lovely and the youngsters were very courteous and polite. I've been to several of these functions but this was certainly the best."
Donna Hannent, co-owner of Albany House on Bridge Street, said: "The transport was all organised for us which was great. Everyone's been looked after very well and we would certainly come again if invited."
Ms Upton said it had been a terrific success. "It was hard work but I have a very good team of girls working with me and it all went according to plan. I think it's good that students and the elderly can get together like this and we're definitely planning something similar for next year."
