EMNETH: Jury hears compensation claims in sex abuse trial
A FORMER Wisbech Port Authority supervisor left disabled after an accident at work claims the woman he is alleged to have sexually abused wants the compensation he received for his injuries.
A jury at Cambridge Crown Court heard the suggestions during the trial of John Allen, who is accused of 13 sexual offences against a girl between 1994 and 1999.
Allen, 63, of St Edmund’s Drive, Emneth, denies eight counts of indecency with a child, four charges of indecent assault and one charge of rape and claims the woman, now in her late 20s, has made up the allegations.
The court was told that Allen had received £250,000 in compensation from his former employers after they accepted responsibility for an industrial accident in October 2009 in which he suffered leg injuries.
Allen had to have his left leg amputated below the knee in February this year due to complications.
Chartered psychologist Wendy Large, who gave Allen therapy following his accident, said Allen had told her he had been accused of sexual abuse, but
claimed “it was lies, that there had been something but she had over-dramatised.”
During cross-examination by Allen’s barrister, Caroline Allison, Miss Large said: “He said he thought she wanted the compensation.”
The court also heard testimony claiming that the alleged victim had talked of what she could do if she had £50,000, but had not threatened to go to the police if she did not receive a payment.
The woman herself admitted she took several months to make a formal complaint against Allen after first speaking to police in September 2010, but denied she was making up the accusations in order to obtain Allen’s money.
She said: “I am saying it because I have carried it around for 10 years and I want to get it off my chest. I didn’t think anyone would listen to me or believe me.”
The trial continues.
