End-of-era award for Fairstead's Margaret

LONG-SERVING Labour councillor Margaret Wilkinson received one of two final prestigious awards to be presented by the former Transport and General Workers' Union at a presentation ceremony in Lynn.

Earlier this year the TGWU merged with Amicus to form the Unite union and that meant the Percy Gardiner awards from its Lynn district committee, also covering West Norfolk, Wisbech and South Lincolnshire, were the last to be made.

Mrs Wilkinson, of Post Mill on the town's Fairstead Estate, has been a TGWU member for more than 30 years and one of its nominated councillors. She has also served on the eastern region conference arrangement committee and been chairman of the regional Labour Party women's group.

Mick Doherty, regional industrial organiser for the T&G section of Unite, said the engraved glass bowl presented to Mrs Wilkinson at Lynn Town Hall was an important award as it came from her peers and recognised "her tremendous service to the union over many years".

About 100 people attended the dinner, at which a similar district award was made to Mr Mark Plumb, senior steward at Premier Foods in Wisbech. He is a regional union learning adviser and sits on the regional committee.

Mr Doherty said three regional awards were made the same evening to Mr Paul Batterham, former senior steward at Foster Refrigerator in Lynn, Mr Neville Addison, senior steward at Pinguin Foods in Lynn, and Mr Colin Cunnington, the district committee chairman, who works at Premier Foods in Wisbech.
