End of era for Marshland rink

A POPULAR Marshland venue which has provided youngsters with hours of fun is to close after more than 30 years.

Chris Endicott owner of Skaters roller rink in Walpole Highway is retiring next year and a number of development companies have already expressed an interest in the site.

Developer Peter Humphrey Associates, based in Wisbech, has submitted a planning application for the land to West Norfolk Council for 24 houses, including 7 affordable homes, but the business has not yet been sold.

The application proposes the demolition of Skaters and its outbuildings and the new homes would represent an eight per cent increase in the number of houses in the village.

Mr Endicott (65) took over the business 24 years ago and the building, which boasts a 12,000 square foot maple floor, was rebuilt and modernised in 1991.

In the 1970s, the skating rink was known as the Walpole Rollerdrome and attracted visitors from across the region.

Mr Edicott told the Lynn News: "I would have liked to see it carry on as a skating rink, but unfortunately it will sell much easier for development. Skating is an excellent way for young people and adults to spend a few hours.

"People come from miles around to skate here, it's not just a village thing, it's an East Anglian thing. We have groups of people travel from everywhere, including London and Leicestershire, but I'm finding it too much work for one person."

There are concerns within the community and neighbouring villages about the loss of facilities for young people.

Former West Norfolk mayor and Walpole Highway resident councillor Ann Clery-Fox said: "There is a big football pitch, but Skaters is somewhere young people can go in the winter. It is a social area for young people and their parents and it is very useful for the village."

Skaters will remain open throughout the winter.
