Energy savers pay visit to Swaffham
SWAFFHAM'S EcoTech Centre welcomed schoolchildren from across Norfolk last Thursday to celebrate energy-saving work that they have been carrying out in their schools.
More than 40 schools took part in a ground-breaking programme in which they have cut their energy use by up to 40 per cent through making simple lifestyle changes. The programme has been developed and run by the National Trust in partnership with Norfolk County Council.
Two West Norfolk schools – St Martin at Shouldham Primary and Snettisham Primary – were among the top four prizewinners. St Martin's won an award for "spreading the message" and was presented by Stuart Weaver, general manager at the EcoTech Centre, with a day at the environmental showpiece, including a trip to the viewing platform at the top of its wind turbine.
Pupils Jake Banwell, Denva Bucke, Cameron Emery, Isaac Hobday and Jacques Morley represented the Shouldham school.
Snettisham got a special award for "excellent energy-saving work and ideas" and received 200, donated by the county council, from David Clements, of Norfolk Property Services. Its representative pupils were Andrew Boyd, Sophie Gannon, Molly Holmes, Sophie Matthews and Tom Savage.
Over the past four years, schools have been reducing their carbon footprint by switching off computers and lights, filling kettles with only the amount of water actually needed, turning down thermostats by one degree and keeping windows draught-free.
