Eye socket fractured in drink-fuelled attack

THREE men who attacked a club-goer after he accidentally picked up one of their drinks, have been jailed at Norwich Crown Court.

Victim Raymond Mayes was left with a fractured eye socket and cuts and bruises after he was set upon after drinking at the Chicago club in Lynn's Norfolk Street on October 19.

David Richmond (24), of 8 Earsham Drive, Lynn; Nicholas Hinson (19), of 2 Westmark, Fairstead, Lynn, and Richard Stoker (26), of 24 Westfields, Fairstead, Lynn, all admitted assaulting Mr Mayes when they appeared in court yesterday.

Lori Tucker, prosecuting, told the court: "Alcohol played a substantial part in what happened."

Mr Mayes had drunk a "considerable" amount of lager and accidentally picked up a drink belonging to Richmond. It was returned but the incident caused a disagreement. She said all three had accepted responsibility, saying they delivered three or four blows as a "group attack."

Mr Mayes was sitting on a bench when he was attacked and the three men had pushed him away from a CCTV camera – but were spotted by a passing police patrol car.

Judge Alasdair Darroch sent all three into custody for eight months, Hinson to a young offenders' institution and the others to prison.

"This court has to send out the clearest and simplest message that if anyone picks on a man and attacks him, fuelled by alcohol, they will go straight to prison."

Mr John Farmer, for Richmond, said his client was "deeply embarrassed" about his involvement and was remorseful. It had been "fundamentally out of character."

Mr Stephen Spence, for Hinson, said he had not been in trouble before and was hard working while Mr William Carter for Stoker said he was a "decent young man," who was ashamed.
