F word names for TV star chicks

THE winners of a competition to name three rare marsh harrier chicks at Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve have been announced.

Visitors to the reserve were asked to choose names for the marsh harrier chicks that have been made famous thanks to their appearance on the BBC's Springwatch programme, which was filmed at Fakenham's Pensthorpe Nature Reserve.

The winning names were announced at the reserve's visitor and education centre by the Hawk and Owl Trust president, actor Liza Goddard on Sunday, June 29.

They are Fred, Flo, and Fleur and were chosen by Caroline and David Gittens, of Colkirk, near Fakenham. They will receive a framed picture of the birds taken by wildlife photographer Martin Hayward Smith as their prize.

A special camera was placed in the marsh harrier nest allowing the public to watch the family life of these rare birds up close on a screen in the visitors' centre. Some of the footage has been broadcast on the Springwatch programme.

All three chicks have now made their first flight although it will be some time until they have learned to hunt and so become independent of their mother. Visitors should to be able to see the birds at the reserve until September this year when they are expected to migrate.
