Fairstead charity champ dies aged 97
A FUNDRAISING champion who raised thousands of pounds for the Fairstead surgery has died aged 97.
Peggy Ward, of Ranworth, Fairstead, helped the centre buy a new sterilising machine, an electrocardiogram heart monitor and a physiotherapy couch through her fundraising efforts, which included regular tombolas and raffles.
She died peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday evening and this week her daughter Christine Mackenzie (73) paid tribute to her strong desire to help others and her outgoing personality.
Mrs Mackenzie, of Westmark, Fairstead, said: "She was always willing to help people, perhaps putting herself out on occasions.
"It was her surgery, when she found out they needed the couch and the baby monitor she took it on as her charity.
"She was always ready to go out and about on different outings and holidays, she was very outgoing. She always promised a big party on her 100th birthday but she did not quite make it."
Mrs Ward retired to the area from London with her late husband Henry in the 1980s. She had three children, Christine, Tony and Bob, six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
