Fairstead man found hanging in cell
A FAIRSTEAD man was found hanging in his cell at Norwich Prison where he had been held to face charges of actual bodily harm and criminal damage.
Jonny Riley (28), of Shire Green, was found at 4.55pm on Wednesday and, despite the best efforts of paramedics and staff, he was pronounced dead shortly after 5.20pm.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: "Our sympathies are with the family of Mr Riley at this time. As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation."
Mr Riley had been remanded on two counts of actual bodily harm and criminal damage and was well-known to the courts in Lynn and Norwich.
In March 2004 he was jailed for two-and-a-half years after he attacked two drug dealers – one so badly he shattered his spleen and left him needing medication for life.
The attack came after the two dealers sold Riley's brother a bad heroin hit, which led to him making an attempted suicide bid.
In January 2001 Riley was jailed for 15 months after he threatened staff at Lynn's Chilli Masters take-away with a samurai sword before embedding it in a door.
He went to the premises in Norfolk Street with a friend on March 4, 2000, after making a telephone call earlier in the evening in which he made racist comments to a member of staff, threatening that he would "cut them up".
