Fakenham's Lucy's dig for victory

A FAKENHAM High School student has been singled out for praise after an archaelogical project with TV's Time Team expert Carenza Lewis.

Lucy Smith (15) has just been awarded a certificate for the best assignment in the Year Ten project completed by students back in May.

Ten students jumped at the chance to take part and spent two days in Hindringham working on square metre pits, many carved out in the back gardens of local residents.

Carefully drawing location plans, marking out their work stations and sieving the soil for finds, they approached the whole project with the enthusiasm of keen amateurs.

Once the practical tasks were completed, everyone spent a day at the University of Cambridge Higher Education Field Academy learning how to collate their findings into written assignments.

School coordinator Jo Stone said the whole exercise had been an invaluable experience.

Lucy's certificate came from the Society for Medieval Archaeology and was presented to her by Carenza Lewis at a celebration evening held at Fakenham College conference hall.

Among invited guests were many of the home owners from Hindringham who had allowed their gardens to be excavated.

Ms Lewis congratulated all the students on their achievements and spoke about the value of archaeology as a subject to study and practice.
