A group of Spanish students from the Valencia region has spent a week in Fakenham as part of a regular exchange programme with the High school.

The thirteen teenagers with their two teachers, who come from the orange-growing district of Nules just north of Valencia, were welcomed at a reception attended by mayor Janet Holdom – pictured with Carmen Garcia, left, and Carmen Lucas.

Deputy head John McCourt, who was part of the first exchange established in 1989, greeted everyone in Spanish and said how proud he was that such an important cultural and educational link had been maintained for more than 20 years. He paid tribute to Head of Spanish at the school, Anne Prentis, who had kept the programme going with three different Spanish schools despite many obstacles along the way.

Gifts were presented by the mayor and a welcome cake cut before the students sat down to a lunch of some typical English foods.

During their stay the visitors attended a number of school lessons, en joyed the Thursday market and went bowling.

Trips out were to Norwich, London, Cambridge and Wells.

In March a party of Fakenham students will go to Nules, their visit timed to coincide with the major street festival of Las Fallas centred on Valencia.
