Fakenham: 'Flea-pit' set to be replaced
AMBITIOUS plans are set to transform the car park section of Fakenham's Thursday market, known for years as the flea-pit.
Owner James Beck, who runs a weekly auction from his own hall adjacent to the area, has applied for planning permission to demolish and replace the old corrugated iron shed on the west side of the market.
He also wants to get rid of the market stall frames which only come into use on market days.
The replacement for the dilapidated shed would be a steel-framed storage
building which could be secured.
It would house mobile stands for the marketeers which could be wheeled out on market days and returned under cover.
The move would also free up more than 30 spaces for car parking during the week.
Cattle auctions were a regular feature of market days in Fakenham from the 1800s, but ceased prior to the 1970s.
Their legacy has become an increasing eyesore and Mr Beck has decided the time is right to say goodbye to this piece of local history.
If his plans are approved by the district council, he hopes to start building work in the autumn.
The town council's development and market committee, which runs the regular charter market in the centre of town, has expressed its support for the idea.
