Fakenham: Moves to save town heritage

URGENT action is needed to safeguard Fakenham's unique character and charm.

Planners and conservationists agreed last week to draw up new guidelines and to take a fresh look at the way the town's important conservation area is managed.

The aim is to hold public consultations, including an exhibition and meetings in the autumn and to have amended management plans and re-drawn boundaries in place by early next year.

A report to North Norfolk Council's development control committee on Thursday suggested that a review of Fakenham's conservation area was long overdue and that over-development is gradually eroding its character and appearance. It pointed out Fakenham is one of the district's outstanding conservation areas and should get priority.

The centre of Fakenham was designated a conservation area in 1975. The area is centred on the market place and market square and its boundaries extend from Wells Road in the north to Hempton Road in the south. The report says the area is too restricted and some of the grounds of Fakenham High School should be included. It calls for the quality of new developments to be improved and more community involvement to encourage residents to "re-connect" with their heritage.
