Family home saved thanks to council
A CASH-strapped home owner has been thrown a lifeline through the Government Mortgage Rescue Scheme.
West Norfolk Council has become one of the first councils in the country to complete a mortgage rescue to bail out a family who could otherwise have lost their home.
The council used the scheme to enable mum Emma Whitford, of Fairstead, Lynn, to shift onto a shared-equity arrangement after she lost her job and started struggling to meet mortgage repayments.
Ms Whitford said: "It's really a huge weight off my mind, especially with looking after my children and looking for a job."
The Government launched the Mortgage Rescue Scheme in January to help householders who have been left with nowhere to turn.
Eligible householders can be offered loans, the opportunity to transfer their home to a housing association and stay on as a tenant or a shared-equity deal.
West Norfolk Council portfolio holder for community David Harwood said: "If there's a simple message for worried homeowners it's to talk to your lender as soon as you've got a problem. If you are still worried, talk to your local Citizen's Advice Bureau or the housing needs team at the council."
