Fateful time for QEH fete

The future of a half-a-century old fete, which annually raises thousands of pounds for Lynn's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, looks in doubt.

In the latest Lynn Hospitals League of Friends newsletter, chairman, Mrs Pat Roome, explains to members: "The fete this year was rather disappointing.

She then added: "Sadly, it would seem that fetes have had their day and we will have to think very seriously about next year."

The annual hospital fete, seen as the league of friends' main fundraiser, has been held for almost 50 years and normally attracts well over 1,000 people.

However, this year the event, held at the hospital in July, saw numbers drop by about a third and takings were down.

It was thought attendance had been affected by the fact posters put up in Gayton Road had been removed – the only one left being on hospital property. "We put them up every year as that's how the public get to know about the fete but for some reason they were taken down," Mrs Roome said, feeling that children had not been responsible because one of the posters was removed meticulously.

West Norfolk borough and Norfolk county councils said it was not them – but new fly-posting policies meant the posters wouldn't have been allowed anyway and would have been liable to have been removed.

The fete – which had 22 stalls – nethertheless made 5,500 for benefiting hospital patients and staff.

"Thankfully, Graham Mussett's grand draw did very well," said Mrs Roome, adding, however: "Without him and his team of helpers we would have been hard pressed to make any profit at all."
