Fears over knock-on effect of Heacham traffic lights
THE Mayor of Hunstanton has sounded a note of caution about long-awaited traffic lights now under construction on the A149 at Heacham.
Richard Bird fears traffic problems could be caused in communities to the north and south of Heacham when the lights become operational in spring.
Cllr Bird said busy weekends already resulted in long tailbacks of traffic on the Al49. If further disruption was caused by the traffic lights, visitors and businesses could be adversely affected.
Cllr Bird's cycle business, Fat Birds Don't Fly, is on the A149. He said: "In the summer months, I see huge amounts of traffic back up along the main road.
"It can take an hour-and-a-half to travel from Hunstanton to Lynn and that's before the new traffic lights are in place."
Work on the lights is due to take about three months so this year's Easter bank holiday could be the first time the full effects on other villages along the Al49 can be assessed.
"We will have to wait and see what the effect will be, but concerns are already being voiced," he added.
Heacham residents campaigned for years for safety improvements at the Norfolk Lavender junction, an accident blackspot. Local and visiting motorists had also experienced years of frustrating waits at the junction at busy periods on the A149.
There was relief and joy in the village when Norfolk County Council approved the traffic lights scheme on which work finally started at the end of last year.
