Feathers fly over toucan crossing

RESIDENTS who have raised concerns about plans for a new toucan crossing are complaining this week that the project is already a "done deal".

However, Norfolk County Council says there is support for the crossing and makes no apology for it going ahead as planned.

As reported in the Lynn News on Friday, local residents have spoken out about plans to put the crossing on the A1078 (Low Road) South Wootton, fearing their road, Hall Road, would become congested as a result.

Norfolk County Council unveiled plans for the 80,000 toucan-controlled pedestrian and cyclist crossing which, it hopes, will allow easier access to South Wootton Junior School.

Parents cause problems parking in Hall Lane, where the school is, and now residents of Hall Road, on the opposite side of Low Road, fear in order to use the new crossing, they will park in their road as well.

About 20 people met county council representatives on site on Tuesday to discuss the plan – and some left disappointed.

Resident John O’Brien said: “It went badly. It is all done and dusted.”

Mr O’Brien said he felt youngsters who stood to benefit from the new crossing were not in the school’s catchment area, adding: “It is a waste of public money.”

County council communications officer for planning and transportation Melanie Willis said consultation letters had been sent to residents in October. Most at the meeting agreed a crossing was needed.

“I understand that this location falls on the edge of one parish and another but will benefit all pedestrians wishing to cross this busy road.

“South Wootton Parish Council supports the crossing as a local need and not just for the school itself.”

Work on the crossing was programmed to start in February 2008 and would take place, unless plans changed.

Residents were concerned about the existing school parking problem and the county has agreed to look into this too.
