Feltwell playgroup fights for survival
A PLAYGROUP which has thrived for more than 30 years is fighting to stay open after a sudden and sharp drop in numbers.
In June last year, Feltwell Playgroup celebrated its 30th anniversary with a party attended by nearly 40 youngsters. This term, the number of children has fallen to 18.
Playgroup leaders have changed some session times to boost finances and are appealing for support from the local community. They are also planning a year-long programme of monthly fundraising events starting in January.
Playgroup chairman Claire Scarff said there was a national trend towards falling numbers of two-and-a-half to five-year-olds. There had also been a marked drop in the number of young children in the village.
"We have done some research in the village and we have got 15 babies due in the new year. But at the moment there is a definite shortage of young children," said Mrs Scarff.
The playgroup recently raised 60 at a cake stall and shared the proceeds between its own funds and Children In Need.
An under-eights disco in the WI Hall, where playgroup sessions are held, is taking place from 5.30pm to 7pm on Friday, December 7.
And a Christmas raffle is also being organised and will be drawn on Wednesday, December 12.
In January, playgroup children will be making money boxes to fill with small change and a Valentine bingo is planned in February.
A jumble sale and quiz night will be taking place in March, followed by a sponsored "collect" in April.
Future months will see a race night, a 1970s carwash to be sponsored by Breckland Garage, a mini fun day, a cocktail party, a promises auction and calendar-making. Mrs Scarff said the playgroup was also offering longer session times from 9am to 3pm, including a lunch club from 11.30am to 12.30pm, on Wednesdays and Fridays.
"From January, we are raising fees and opening to children from the age of two," she added.
More information about the playgroup, raffle tickets or any of the events is available from Mrs Scarff, 07773 226963.
