Flood turns The Walks into The Paddles
THE familiar site of a waterlogged recreation ground at Lynn's historic Walks made an unwelcome return this week.
The problem has been linked to recent heavy rainfall which has caused the Gaywood River, which runs through the park, to burst its banks and flood the field.
A new drainage system has been installed on the recreation ground as part of a 31/2 million restoration project at The Walks, but due to the water levels of the river the field has been unable to drain effectively.
A spokesman for West Norfolk Council, which is funding the scheme with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund, said: “The recreation ground has historically suffered with waterlogging. As part of the refurbishment project a new drainage system was installed in April.
“It was working effectively throughout the summer but we have had an unusually high level of rain recently, which has coincided with flood warnings. The river which runs through The Walks has burst its banks and once the water levels have subsided, the recreation ground should drain.”
