Fly-tipping warning to 'Good Samaritans'
A CALL has gone out to householders not to try to handle discarded waste themselves this week after a West Norfolk man had a rude awakening at the local recycling centre.
Public-spirited Peter Hopkins, of Hall View Road, Gaywood, was disgusted to see that someone had dumped a bag of rubbish at the front of his property last Thursday morning.
Wanting to remove the fly-tipped bag from his premises, and also dispose of it correctly, Mr Hopkins (62) decided to take it to Lynn Recycling Centre in Horsleys Fields.
However, when he got there, Mr Hopkins was astonished when staff dipped into the bag before beginning to hand individual items back to him. He was then left with the choice of placing the rubbish in bins at the centre himself or taking it away again.
"I could not believe it," said Mr Hopkins. "I did not know what was in the bag. It could have had hypodermic needles."
An incensed Mr Hopkins said such rejection of rubbish brought in by members of the public would only lead to more fly-tipping. He had contacted Norfolk County Council to make a formal complaint.
This week, a county council spokesman apologised, saying: "We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused to the visitor to Lynn Recycling Centre when he tried to deal with fly-tipped waste and do accept that on this occasion our contractor got it wrong."
He added: "Our advice to members of the public, for their own safety, is to report fly-tipping incidents to their local council rather than identify, handle, transport and dispose of this rubbish themselves."
