Focus on plans for Lynn town centre

PLANS to redevelop parts of Lynn to create a vibrant town centre with new retail, leisure and tourism opportunities will come under the microscope this week.

West Norfolk Council's cabinet is being asked to back proposals for consultants to create a master plan for possible new developments at a number of sites which, at present, do little to create a positive image of the town.

The plan would pay particular attention to the area between Baxter's Plain, the Vancouver Quarter and Railway Road, including the bus station and St James Swimming and Fitness Centre.

A report to cabinet members states: "This area provides a natural expansion area for town centre activities and is an important gateway to the town centre, although parts of it presently comprise a poor quality built environment which does little to promote a positive or attractive image of the town.

"The proposed master plan will not replace the urban renaissance work currently in place but rather add a further level of detail indicating how the town centre can evolve and move forward to meet the issues now identified and development inquiries being received."

The move comes after a number of developers expressed an interest in possible schemes for the area.

These include a potential expansion of the Vancouver Quarter into the bus station area, a possible relocation of the library within the town centre and aspirations by the borough council to move the swimming pool.

Consideration will also be given to a revised bus terminal with short-stay parking provision, an enhancement of the main gateways to the area, an enhancement to the setting of Lynn Museum and the potential for inclusion of residential units.

Cabinet members will discuss the master plan at a meeting on Tuesday and if the project goes ahead it will be funded through the 100,000 which has been allocated for the council's urban development strategy.
