From neglect to beauty spot thanks to scout Ryan (14)
ENTERPRISING scout Ryan Halls gained an £8,000 grant to transform a neglected pond in South Lynn.
Ryan (14), of the 7th South Lynn Scout Group, applied for help from the Norfolk Youth Fund while working for his Chief Scout Gold Award.
Scout leader Janice Minns said: “He wanted to put something back into South Lynn and open up the pond for the community to use.”
The project also received help from the Safer Stronger Neighbourhood Team and clear-up teams from West Norfolk Council, she said.
The pond had been made into a place where families could go for a picnic and more local youngsters were taking up angling. Ryan, now a young leader with the scout group, received his gold award in May, she added.
South Lynn Forum member and South Lynn Angling Club secretary Brenda Croucher said an open day was held to enable local people and special guests to view the refurbished pond.
“The scouts put on various stalls and there was a raffle for club funds. Refreshments were served and lots of people made the most of the new benches and picnic tables,” she said.
Visitors she spoke to included a man who remembered fishing in the pond as a small boy 67 years ago. “I think lots of people used to but it got a bit overgrown and it wasn’t easy to maintain,” said Mrs Croucher.
All the anglers were grateful to Ryan and the scouts. “It’s a good thing for South Lynn. We don’t have many open spaces so this is a great addition,” she said.
