Full marks for school attendance

A LITTLE incentive can go a very long way, as youngsters at a Lynn school have proved with their 100 per cent attendance records.

A rising number of pupils at the town’s Greyfriars school have been eager not to miss a single day, even if it means arriving with colds and sniffles, so their names can be put into a draw to win a laptop computer at the end of the school year.

Lynn company Uptech began sponsoring attendance three years ago, and the first year saw six names go into the hat to win a computer.

This year 16 youngsters had not missed a day – and there were three prizes on offer.

Uptech provided a laptop computer while Lloyds TSB provided an i-pod and Uptech’s Jason Carlton gave a book token.

“The impact of Uptech’s involvement has been dramatic,” said headteacher Paul Shanks.

“The school attendance figure was below national average. however, the attendance after one year of Uptech’s sponsorship rose to 94.4 per cent, which was above the national figures and has remained so this year.

“The pupils are eager to be involved,” he added.

Weekly prizes have also been introduced for classes with attendance of more than 95 per cent and all pupils who manage 100 per cent for the year receive a book token and certificate as well has having their names entered for the prize draw.

A text service has also helped the absence rate drop, with parents receiving text messages asking them to contact the school if their child is not in school.
