Fun weekend for Lynn group
A GROUP of people united by their battles with mental ill health are setting off for a weekend of fun and enjoyment today as the founder continues to raise awareness of mental illness.
The Lynn Leisure Group is undertaking its second ever independent overnight trip ahead of World Mental Health Day on Wednesday.
Mum-of-four Helen Bensihem (52), who has fought mental illness for the past 17 years since suffering postnatal depression, launched the group two years ago.
She said: “I want to encourage the wider community to look at people with mental illness and realise we do have lots of skills – we are just ill! Mental health affects the whole population. Having gone through all those years of being quite ill and sometimes being in hospital, I have met some amazing people with some incredible skills, such as writing and art.”
The leisure group has helped give 100 service users the chance to go on day trips to London and long weekends, some of whom have not left their home town in years.
Mrs Bensihem, of Corbyn Shaw Road, Churchill Park, Gaywood, secured 5,000 of European funding to get it off the ground and continually seeks and secures top-up grants to keep it going.
“I am helping service users and have also realised my own skills and potential,” she said. “After many years, I am now building on this new-found confidence.”
