Further tributes paid to Jonno Barber

FURTHER tributes have been paid to popular Downham student Jonathon "Jonno" Barber whose body was found in the River Great Ouse near the town last Tuesday.

Jonathon (18), of Broadlands, is thought to have been blown into the water by a strong gust of wind as he was walking home along the river bank from a party in Salters Lode at about 3am on Saturday, March 1.

He had returned home from Staffordshire University for the weekend to spend Mother's Day with his mother, Carolyn.

The inquest was opened and adjourned in Norwich on Friday by Greater Norfolk assistant deputy coroner David Osborne. Provisional cause of death was drowning, but more information and the outcome of further tests is awaited. Jonathon's body was identified by his father, Nick, at the scene of the river recovery.

Before going to university last year, Jonathon worked on Saturdays at the Bakers Oven in Wales Court, Downham, for about 18 months.

Manageress Mrs Emma Myall said: "He was such a friendly, lovely young lad and so helpful to everybody. We are all really upset.

"We knew on the Saturday that he had gone missing and were hoping and praying that he would be found well."

An email to the Lynn News, from the Crown family in Salters Lode, said: "Jonno was a very close friend of my sons and at the same party. Our hearts go out to every one of his family and friends.

"He was a very quiet, polite boy who will be sadly missed by all of our family. Rest in peace, Jonno."

On the Lynn News website (www.lynnnews.co.uk), Mrs Davis, from Downham, said: "I would like to give my heartfelt sympathy to the Barber family. As a mother I can only say how upset I was to learn of this tragic death so close to home. Every time I drive over the bridge and see all the flowers left by his friends and family I have feelings of wanting to cry, yet pleased that so many people remember him."

Jonathon's funeral service will be at St Edmund's Church in Downham on Friday at 2pm, followed by interment at the town's Rouse's Lane cemetery.
