GAYWOOD: Biker Andy’s plea to help racing dream

Andy Dunthorne hopes to become a motorcycle racer despite badly damaging his hand in an industrial accident.

A Gaywood carpenter is looking for help to achieve his motorcycling dreams after an industrial accident left him missing two fingers.

Andy Dunthorne, 41, is determined to fulfil his dream of becoming a racing motorcyclist after a devastating injury at work saw the little and ring fingers on his right hand sawn off by a wood-cutting machine in 2000.

Receiving his motorcycle racing licence while in hospital, Mr Dunthorne was spurred on to make a full recovery and get back into racing to achieve his boyhood ambition.

He said: “It’s the only thing that has kept me going. I can’t work the way I used to work and racing was my only other passion.

“I’ve now managed to get back into part-time work but it’s not like it used to be, but I put every effort into making my work the best I can.

“Without my bikes, there isn’t much else in my life.”

Mr Dunthorne’s pride and joy, a 1,000cc Yamaha motorcycle, has been specially-modified with a brake that works around his injury.

He said: “I’ve got the bike working as best it can to suit my hand and I’ve adapted my riding style. I’ve been training and I’ve done a few track days but I’ve reached the point where I am too fast for the track.

“I have to move up a level and train seriously or stop.”

Mr Dunthorne is looking for local businesses who would be interested in sponsoring him, either a large business or a couple of smaller ones.

He would need to raise around £15-20,000 to pay for equipment, fees, tyres and training for the season.

If you’re interested in sponsoring Andy, or would like to know more about his motorcycling hopes, call him on 07931 558659.
