Gifts to mark Dow's 50th

FIVE Lynn schools have been awarded a bumper £1,500 each by Dow Chemical after entering a scheme launched to celebrate the North Lynn site's 50th anniversary.

Schools in the area were invited to submit students’ ideas for science education or environmental projects that they believed deserved a donation.

Several schools came up with ideas they would like to spend the money on, but the winning projects came from Highgate Infant School, Gaywood’s Howard Infant School, Gaywood Community Primary School, North Wootton Community School and Gaywood’s Park High School.

Teachers and pupils with key responsibilities on the projects collected the donations at a special party held at Dow’s Estuary Road site on Thursday.

Dow’s site director Wayne Muil said: “Many of our employees have had or still have children at schools in the area, and, of course, attended them themselves, and we felt this would be a great way of giving something back in our 50th year.”

Highgate’s winning idea was to turn a small plot of rubble into a thriving garden, maintained by the children, while Howard Infant needed support to fund a small greenhouse to start off seedlings to grow in its school garden.

Gaywood Community Primary wanted help to start a new pond and environmental area, and North Wootton youngsters wanted to convert a classroom into a kitchen to provide pupils with a more practical approach to studying nutrition, food handling, food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness.

Park High School will be spending its donation on a greenhouse, pots, seeds and basic gardening and soil sampling equipment to help students with the environmental and land-based science aspects of a new applied science GCSE.

Sue Hooks, who works in distribution at Dow’s Lynn site, helped to launch the scheme.“What was particularly nice was how well the children are engaged in what they grow and what they need in their garden, greenhouse or kitchen,” she said.

“The cheques they’ve received will make a big difference to all of them.”
