Happy New WN Year for Queen

A CROWD of about 400 people greeted The Queen on Sunday when she made her first visit of the New Year to Sandringham church.

Wearing a lime-green coat and matching hat, she smiled as she was presented with posies of flowers by a dozen children.

The Queen was driven the quarter of a mile from Sandringham House to the service, during which the sermon was given by the Bishop of Derby, the Rt Rev Alastair Redfern.

The Duke of Edinburgh walked to the church through Sandringham Park with guests including the Earl and Countess of Derby and Viscount and Viscountess Brookborough.

Two outstanding West Norfolk students received special awards from The Queen at Sandringham House on Sunday.

Kathryn Lee (18), who attended Lynn's King Edward VII School, received The Queen's Gold Medal.

A former pupil of Lynn's Springwood High School, Fiona Hayter (19), was presented with a copy of the complete works of Shakespeare signed by The Queen.

Kathryn, of North Wootton, gained A grades in biology, chemistry, maths, English language and general studies in her A levels in 2007.

After receiving her medal, she chatted to The Queen about dentistry, which she is now studying at Liverpool University.

Kathryn's parents, Rod and Sue, were also invited to the audience. Mrs Lee said Kathryn had to return to university almost straight afterwards and was due to sit two examinations yesterday.

Fiona, of Gaywood, gained A grades at A level in French, German, religious studies and English literature. She is now reading modern languages at Nottingham University.
