Hilgay Buffaloes have given £6,330 to Addenbrooke’s Hospital to help make the difficult become do-able for leukaemia patients.

The money was raised by the RAOB’s Century Lodge, which in 2010 donated £5,125 to the Cambridge hospital to support its work towards treating leukaemia.

The first donation was inspired by the efforts of Lodge members Paul Jacklin and his father, Frank. Paul’s son-in-law, Dean Vincent, died of leukaemia days after he was married in hospital to his daughter, Kirsty.

He undertook a programme of 50 visits to 50 different RAOB lodges in a year, accompanied by his father, which raised £5,125.

He was also awarded the Buff of the Year trophy.

Century Lodge secretary Stephen Teverson said: “Since then, a series of raffles, dances, socials, sausage suppers and many other fundraising activities have contributed to the second donation.”

The £5,700 raised was boosted by £630 from a collection taken at the funeral of Mr Eric Rose, of Crimplesham.

Mr Rose’s widow, Patricia, who is Kirsty’s grandmother, brought along the cheque in person.

Dr Charles Crawley, who leads on haemoncology and bone barrow transplants at Addenbrooke’s, told RAOB members and friends that leukaemia was treated by three main methods, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and stem cell technology.

Current work was focused on making the right treatment choice for each patient.

Dr Crawley said the Buffs’ donation would go towards the purchase of a photophoresis machine, to separate red and white blood cells outside a patient’s body.

White cells were exposed to UV light to destroy the cancer and the red cells were returned to the body.

Mr Teverson thanked Dr Crawley for attending and highlighted the many people who had contributed their time, effort and talent to the fundraising drive.

Kirsty Vincent and her mother, Angy Jacklin, were also present and heard that a plaque was to be erected at Addenbrooke’s in memory of Dean and the remarkable fundraising effort by his family and friends.
