Hundreds on Lynn heritage trail
HUNDREDS of visitors poured into Lynn on Sunday for the chance to take a free look behind some of the town's most historic buildings and best-known landmarks.
Three new attractions meant there were 26 in total in this year's Heritage Open Day – hailed by organisers as one of the biggest and best yet.
Newcomers, the Jewish Cemetery in Millfleet, London Road Methodist Church and 11 to 13 King Street, the first home of West Norfolk High School for girls, joined regulars in the line-up such as South Gates, Greyfriars Tower, the Old Gaol House, Thoresby College and True's Yard Fishing Museum.
The open day was organised by Lynn Civic Society, with support from Lynn Preservation Trust, West Norfolk Council, the Blue Badge town guides and local businesses and private owners.
It was held under the auspices of the Civic Trust, which organises the event on a national level with English Heritage support.
Lynn Civic Society chairman Alison Gifford said the event went really well, and the late-summer sunshine helped ensure its success.
"We had more than 1,600 in the Tourist Information Centre and the open-top bus and ferry had people on it all the time," she said.
Clifton House proved extremely popular with around 800 people paying a visit to the 18th century home of English Heritage's chief executive Dr Simon Thurley, and around 600 people took a look behind 11 to 13 King Street.
