Hunny Xmas swim hits big 5–0

BRAVE swimmers taking on the freezing water in the Christmas Day dip at Hunstanton will have an extra reason to celebrate at this year's fundraising extravaganza.

The popular event, which has raised tens of thousands of pounds for a number of charities over the years, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Organisers, Hunstanton and District Round Table, are now appealing for as many swimmers as possible to take part to ensure the day is a huge success.

For many people in Hunstanton the annual swim has become as big a Christmas tradition as turkey and presents.

The day starts with a parade from 11am, when spectators gather along the promenade to cheer on the brave swimmers, many of whom wear fancy dress costumes.

Round table publicity officer Paul Searle told the Lynn News: "It is part of the local calendar. Going down to the Christmas swim is something we have grown up with, it is a tradition like having Christmas lunch.

"We have been very lucky with the weather and I cannot remember the last rough one we had.

"People like to come along and see their friends in the morning, it is a nice walk out and they can get back in time for lunch, it is perfect. We had 65 swimmers last year and it would be great if we could get 100 for the anniversary."

The round table will be raising money for a number of local charities including The Norfolk Hospice Tapping House, which hopes to enter a team on the day.

Sponsorship forms for those wanting to take part are now available from Witley Press shop, in High Street, Hunstanton, and Fishers of Hunstanton, on Greevegate.

Swimmers can compete as individuals or teams and prizes will be awarded for the best fancy dress costumes.

Registration for the swim will be held at the Oasis from 10am on Christmas Day.
