Hunstanton has good laugh for St Edmund
A DAY of feasting, celebration and laughter is being planned in Hunstanton as the town hosts the very first Edfest spectacular.
The event is being held on Thursday, November 20, as a celebration of the life of St Edmund, who landed in Hunstanton as a prince in 855 AD before being crowned King of East Anglia a year later.
It will feature a day of art exhibitions, plays and re-enactments, competitions and services before culminating in a hog roast feast at the Town Hall.
A small committee was formed to organise the celebration following a successful fish and chip supper last year, and treasurer Elaine Bird is hoping it will be a St Edmund's Day to remember.
She told the Lynn News: "It will be something for the whole town to enjoy and it will be a good learning opportunity for people.
"It is all about having fun and being part of the community.
"The WI is helping and the schools and churches are involved so hopefully we can make it fun for everyone."
The legacy of St Edmund features prominently in the resort as his image is included on the town sign at The Green, while two churches fall under his patronage.
He was Patron Saint of England, prior to St George, and spent a year in Hunstanton studying the Book of Psalms.
Mrs Bird said Hunstanton regularly hosted pageants and processions on St Edmund's Day during the 1950s and pictures of those celebrations will be included in a display at Union Church.
The day starts with a cliff top re-enactment of the landing of St Edmund performed by pupils from Glebe House School from 9am.
A short service will then be conducted on the cliff top by Father John Bloomfield followed by the unveiling of a new interpretation board, celebrating the arrival of St Edmund.
A wild boar sausage breakfast will be held at the Cliff Top Caf and the WI will also be holding a coffee morning at the Town Hall.
Exhibitions will be held at St Edmund's Church, the Methodist Church, Our Lady and St Edmund's Catholic Church and the Union Church between 11am and 4pm, while the WI is organising a cake competition.
The day's activities are completed with the hog roast from 7.30pm.
