Iconic soup logo to go

THE iconic image of Campbell's Condensed Soup, which was first produced in the UK from a Lynn factory, is to disappear from shop shelves next year.

Premier Foods, which bought Campbell’s UK in 2006, made the announcement this week in a move which will see the famous product reappearing in supermarkets under the new name Batchelors Condensed Soup.

Lynn has a proud association with the Campbell’s brand as the first cans of soup produced in the UK by the company rolled off a production line in the town in 1959.

The Hardwick Road factory was the first major Campbell’s plant to be constructed outside America but was forced to close its doors earlier this year after the company was bought by Premier Foods in a 460 million deal.

Despite bidding farewell to the iconic image, which was made famous by artist Andy Warhol, Premier Foods is confident the replacement will be equally as successful.

Spokesman Steffan Kerridge said: “The Batchelors Condensed Soups will be the same great-tasting products, made using the same recipes, just branded Batchelors instead.

“We are aware that consumers have this heritage with the Campbell’s brand in the UK and that is why we are doing this change on a slow basis.”

Within 20 years of the Lynn factory opening the workforce had grown to 500 and Campbell’s was producing more than 60 varieties of soup and other foodstuffs and was exporting to more than 50 countries.

Cans carried labels in one of 13 languages and there were swingometers inside the factory to indicate the public’s reaction to the products.
