Incinerator: Tell them we still say NO
WEST Norfolk residents have again been urged to make sure their voices are heard in the fight against the Lynn incinerator proposals.
The plea came as the latest public consultation exercise on the scheme enters its final few days and after it emerged that council chiefs had finally signed a contract for the scheme with Cory Wheelabrator.
Campaign leaders want you to fill in this objection document (there is a link at the bottom of this page) and send it to Norfolk County Council to voice your objections to the plans ahead of the close of the second public consultation on the planning application, which ends next Monday, February 20.
A previous consultation last year saw more than 96 per cent of respondents voice objections to the scheme and leading critics of the project hope the public will again make their opposition clear.
Leading campaigner Mike Knights said: “If you oppose the incinerator and want to do something about it, there are very easy steps you can take at this time that can significantly help with the fight.”
They have also called for residents to write to the government to get the application called in, after it was confirmed that Norfolk County Council and Cory Wheelabrator have now signed a contract for the plant.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, Cory Environmental chief executive Peter Gerstrom and Wheelabrator managing director Gary Aguinaga said: “This is a major step forward in delivering a sustainable solution to Norfolk’s waste problem, as well as creating job opportunities for local people, suppliers and businesses.
“We are now working towards securing the planning and permitting permissions. We will also continue to work positively with all statutory authorities and Norfolk residents to ensure that our proposals undergo full and proper scrutiny.”
But opponents say the signing of the contract actually strengthens their case for the application to be called in by the government and are demanding that the communities secretary, Eric Pickles, steps in to take the final decision himself.
Mr Knights said: “Signing the contract merely formalises the Council’s position underlining why they cannot be trusted to make a fair and impartial decision.
“Now committed to paying a penalty if they do not award planning permission their conflict of interest is obvious for all to see. This is why campaigners are calling for the planning decision to be taken out of Council control.”
