Inquest opens into Tornado tragedy
AN inquest was opened yesterday into the death of a civilian navigator who was killed when he was ejected from an RAF Tornado during a routine test flight last week.
Michael Harland (44), a BAE Systems navigator involved in the maintenance of RAF Marham's GR4 Tornado fleet, was ejected from the aircraft on Wednesday and his body was later found at an old airfield site near North Creake.
Harland, from Lincolnshire, was ejected while the 1,400mph Tornado was performing an inverted roll at 5,000ft, the hearing in Norwich was told.
It also heard that he was a former RAF squadron leader who served in the Gulf War.
Greater Norfolk coroner Mr William Armstrong said a post mortem had not yet been completed and adjourned the inquest until a date to be fixed.
