Inspirational Super Kids

A LITTLE girl who acted as a loving carer, friend and interpreter for her late big brother has been named this year's Lynn News Super Kid.

Six-year-old Sophie Mummery, of Grimston, beat tough competition to scoop the top prize at this year's special ceremony, held at Lynn Town Hall on Tuesday.

The youngster, who could sign even before she spoke, was a constant companion for her brother Matthew (8), who was deaf and had autism.

Deputy Borough Mayor Bill Daws presented her with a trophy, a 300 prize and 200 for her chosen charity, West Norfolk Deaf Children's Society.

Her proud dad Kevin said afterwards: "We are thrilled for Sophie. After everything that's happened, it's good to come here and have some good news for a change. Sophie is an unassuming little girl and we're over the moon she's been recognised and awarded."

Sophie was nominated by her aunt Marion Lawson for her achievements at home and for being a great help to her family – despite her tender years.

Matthew was nominated for a Super Kids award in 2004 after he beat the odds to survive serious childhood cancer, neuroblastoma.

When the illness returned last year and his condition deteriorated, Sophie sat with him and watched his favourite films, helping him with activities he could manage from bed.

Matthew sadly died in February, but Sophie has remained a sunny girl and was brave enough to pay tribute to her brother at his funeral.

The 21st annual awards, sponsored by the Lynn News, Premier Foods, Aldiss of Fakenham, Lynn Police and West Norfolk Council, also celebrated the achievements of other inspirational children in three categories.

Lynn News editor Malcolm Powell also led a round of applause for previous Super Kid nominees who attended on the night.

Superintendent Nick Davison said: "Every nominee has displayed courage, bravery, tolerance and understanding beyond their years. As I reflect on my work and the world I see, I am heartened and reminded of the brilliance of human nature and the capacity for compassion which has been demonstrated by these Super Kids."

Councillor Daws told the children: "The very fact you have been nominated means you are a credit to your families, your community and to yourselves."

The winners each received a trophy, 175 for themselves and 150 to give to their favourite charity. Every nominee received a framed Super Kids certificate and gift vouchers.
