Jail for man who couldn't control his anger

A GAYWOOD man was on Monday jailed for a total of ten months for offences including harassing his former partner and random assaults.

Gary Hardy (20), of 4 Somersby Close, admitted threatening behaviour, harassment, failing to surrender to bail and breaching a 23-week suspended sentence.

The magistrates allowed seven days he had spent on remand in custody to count against his total jail sentence. They also imposed a restraining order requiring Hardy not to contact or go near his former partner.

Kevin Eastwick, prosecuting, said the threatening behaviour charge related to what appeared to be two random and unprovoked assaults on Portuguese men in November last year. Hardy denied any racial element.

The harassment charge related to his former partner, Annie Blyler, with whom he had a 20-month-old child.

There had been problems since the relationship ended and in January this year he grabbed her hair and pulled her into an alley, leaving her shaken and distressed.

He also smashed a pane of glass in her front door and sent a series of distressing text messages to her, said Mr Eastwick.

Chris Brown, for Hardy, said his client expected to go to prison. Mr Brown described the assault as a push and said the door damage was caused by a kick. The text messages were sent over an eight-day period and requested contact with the couple’s child.

“They didn't involve threats of violence,” said Mr Brown.

Hardy had anger issues and had been drinking before the physical confrontation with Ms Blyler. Drink also played a significant part in his actions towards the two Portuguese men. He made no excuse and had started a course in anger management as part of his suspended sentence, said Mr Brown.
