Job losses feared at Lynn shoe shop

JOB losses are in the offing at Lynn's and Fakenham's Stead and Simpson shoe shops as the company is now in the hands of Shoe Zone.

Stead and Simpson branches in the Vancouver Quarter at Lynn and Market Place, Fakenham, have come under the spotlight after Shoe Zone bought the Stead and Simpson business from administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).

On Wednesday, a spokesman for Stead and Simpson said no firm decision had been made about the future of the Lynn shop, despite there being "closing down" posters in the Lynn shop's window. "The situation is still under review," he said, adding that it was too early to say what might happen to the staff.

However, the Lynn News understands the shop must close by March 24 with seven people being made redundant.

Concerning Fakenham, the spokesman hinted it would be likely the Fakenham branch would shut, though added no firm decision had been made about the future of this shop either. He would also not be drawn on staffing issues.

However, the Lynn News has learned the shop will shut by Monday, March 31, with five job losses.

The spokesman did confirm, however, that the Stead and Simpson shop in Swaffham Market Place would be staying.

PwC was appointed to find a buyer for Leicester-based Stead and Simpson earlier this year after the business hit difficulties.

Shoe Zone already has two shops in Lynn, in the Vancouver Quarter and High Street.
