John plays it again!

HUNDREDS of people descended on Heacham church hall on Saturday for the first and only time the village's annual Music Marathon is expected to coincide with Easter.

The 12-hour extravaganza – the 24th organised by local man John Harris – saw 25 musicians and entertainers take centre stage and generated another bumper haul for charity.

North West Norfolk MP Henry Bellingham, and West Norfolk Mayor Kathy Mellish officially opened the event.

Mr Harris started the proceedings on the piano, and other performances included a French play, poetry reading and flute, saxophone and recorder playing. Staff and friends from Heacham’s Fridhem Rest Home also paid a visit during their sponsored bed push.

Mr Harris (65) said between 200 and 300 people attended. “I’m more than grateful to everyone who helped make the day such a success. Next year will be the silver jubilee marathon,” he added.

A total of 355 was collected at the event, but sponsorship is still coming in and the amount raised should be nearer to 500.

The money will be split equally between Different Strokes, a charity which supports younger stroke survivors, Multiple Sclerosis Research, and the Kenyan Children’s Project.

Different Strokes was suggested by Mr Harris' music student Stephanie Walford (25), who suffered a stroke when she was 19, and Mr Harris supports MSR as his wife Rosemary was diagnosed with MS 37 years ago, aged just 27. The Kenyan Children's Project was picked after being suggested by music student Tom Dean (19).
