Keeping closer eye on crime

SUTTON Bridge residents can keep an eye on the town's crime levels from their own front room, thanks to a new interactive website.

Lincolnshire Police have launched a crime-mapping website to allow people living in the county to see where crimes have taken place, to make comparisons with other areas and learn how Neighbourhood Policing Teams are tackling the problems.

Visitors to the site can enter a village or town and be taken directly to the ward it relates to. The user-friendly website then shows whether crime levels have fallen, risen or remained the same and rates the ward compared to the rest of Lincolnshire.

Overall, the Sutton Bridge ward has "average" crime levels, including average levels of car crime, violence and burglaries, which have fallen by 67 per cent since this time last year.

But the website shows the ward has a "high" level of robberies and although anti-social behaviour remains "average," it has risen by eight per cent in the last 12 months.

Deputy chief constable Neil Rhodes said: "For the first time our communities can view crime statistics for their neighbourhood on an interactive map and see crime rates for the last 12 months.

"The force has recently signed up to the Police Pledge which contains clear commitments for all forces and informs the public of the standard of service they should expect and gives communities a stronger voice in setting local priorities. Crime-mapping is part of this commitment and will strengthen community engagement."

Lincolnshire Police is collaborating with the other East Midlands forces and the website includes links to bordering police forces' crime maps.

People using the site will be able to compare their neighbourhoods to adjoining areas across the border.
