Kenya holiday couple's hopes grounded
A HUNSTANTON couple's Kenyan holiday dreams were finally dashed on Wednesday when their flight was cancelled because of continuing turmoil in the East African country.
As the Lynn News revealed last Tuesday, Trevor (53) and Diane (48) Hammond, managers of the Shellbrooke Hotel in Cliff Terrace, had been booked to fly out to Mombasa on Saturday for a fortnight's holiday in Diani Beach on Kenya's south coast.
But they had been 'phoning their holiday company, Thomson Travel, on a daily basis to find out if they were still going because of the unrest in Kenya that has seen about 600 people die and 250,000 driven from their homes following claims of vote rigging in the presidential election.
On Wednesday, they finally learned the flight and holiday had been cancelled and were offered an alternative fortnight's holiday in a different location or their money back.
Speaking last week, Mr Hammond said: "We are looking to a holiday in the Dominican Republic instead, but there were no flights left for Saturday so we have had to change to Monday – and it has cost us more money as well.
"The people coming to take over at the hotel while we are away had made their own plans, but fortunately were able to be a little flexible and cover the extra days for us."
