KING’S LYNN: Assessors say ‘DWP made benefit cut’
Atos Healthcare has responded to Tuesday’s Lynn News story about Teresa Brown who has been told she is no longer entitled to Employment and Support Allowance.
The 48-year-old mother-of-three, of Railway Road, Lynn, who says she needs crutches to walk without falling, is contesting her Atos Healthcare work capability assessment, which concluded she was fit for work.
Mrs Brown said she suffers from three medical conditions which have caused her to fall if she tries to walk without crutches, suffer a nagging pain in her neck and get short of breath quickly.
A spokesman said Atos could not comment on individual cases, but it does not make decisions on individuals’ entitlement to benefit. This is done by a Department for Works and Pensions decision maker.
She said: “The information from the assessment which we send to the DWP forms only one piece of the evidence the DWP decision maker will use when making a decision on benefits.”
Atos uses computers to record all the information given during individual assessments in an easy to understand format for the DWP decision maker, and its doctors, nurses and physiotherapists use their clinical judgement.
She said appeals are against a DWP decision and not Atos Healthcare.
