KING’S LYNN: Friends raising cash to say thanks to a heart charity

On their marks and gear-ing up to raise money for a worthy cause: from left runner Andy Harrod, young family fund-raiser, Eugene Reed, and Mick Reed.

A Lynn runner will be going the extra mile on behalf of his best friend who has been diagnosed with an incurable heart muscle disease.

Andy Harrod, 48, of South Wootton, is running Lynn’s Grand East Anglia Run on May 5 in aid of The Cardiomyopathy Association (CMA), which he says has “done so much” for his friend Michael Reed.

Father-of-two Michael, 54, of Fairstead, Lynn, was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy four years ago.

The condition is when the heart becomes enlarged and weak, so it can’t pump enough blood to the rest of the body, and it can affect people of all ages, even babies.

Michael said: “When the doctors told me what I had, it didn’t mean anything as I didn’t know what it was. I was then put in touch with The Cardiomyopathy Association and they have been brilliant.”

He decided to fundraise for the charity to say thank-you, and was delighted when Andy offered to take part in the run.

Michael now has to take medication and have regular ultrasounds to check his condition doesn’t worsen.

He said: “I will never be cured and as a last resort I can have a heart transplant, but I hope it doesn’t come to that. I just take each day as it comes.”
