KING’S LYNN: GEAR up for the big run with free training sessions

People taking part in this year’s Bespak Grand East Anglia Run (GEAR) can attend free training sessions at Lynnsport.

The weekly sessions will be led by UK Athletics qualified coaches from running club Ryston Runners AC. The sessions will take place on Wednesdays between 7-8 pm at Lynnsport from 6 – 27 March.

The sessions are aimed at beginners and improvers and will include track work, practice runs and practical advice about equipment and techniques, helping runners to prepare for race day on Sunday, May 5.

Roger Partridge, race director, said: “The training evenings have proved really popular in the past and are a great way for people to ensure they’re fit and ready for race day. In previous years, people have come to the evenings as complete novices and gone on to do very well, so the sessions really are for everyone.”

Andy Smith, chairman of Ryston Runners, said: “Good preparation for a 10k for any level of runner is very important and these training evenings offer the perfect opportunity both for complete beginners and for the regular runners wishing to improve on race technique and personal bests. We welcome everyone.

“These sessions will be great fun and will give people lots of tips.”

There is no need to register, just turn up at Lynnsport on the night and report to reception. The training sessions are free of charge.

Participants should attend in usual running kit.

This is the eighth year of the 10k race, which starts and finishes in Lynn’s Tuesday Market Place. For a third year, the race also includes a 1.2 mile Mini-GEAR Fun Run, which is open to anyone aged six and over (under 8s must be accompanied by an adult).

Competitors must be 15 years and over to take part in the 10k race.

The Bespak GEAR is a UKA and BARR Gold-graded event. It costs £17 for affiliated runners and £19 for unaffiliated runners to enter Bespak GEAR and £6.00 for adults, £5.00 for under 16s and £4.00 for under 8s to enter Mini-GEAR.

For the first time the Bespak GEAR plays host to the EVAC (Eastern Veterans Athletics Club) Championship. The EVAC Championships are an individual event for males and females with awards for the over 35s in 5 year age categories up to 70+.

Runners who are members of the Eastern Veterans Athletics Club (EVAC) and wish to participate in the EVAC Championships, which are held as part of the race can do so by paying an additional £1 fee when entering Bespak GEAR. Membership numbers will be required at the point of entry.

Bespak GEAR is organised by the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk and sponsored by Bespak. There are generous cash prizes for Bespak GEAR category winners and everyone taking part will receive a medal and goody bag.
