KING’S LYNN INCINERATOR: MP to raise issue of public purse paying for Cory’s legal bill
A Norfolk MP says he will be raising a motion in Parliament on the use of tax payers’ money to fund the legal costs of the incinerator developers.
Henry Bellingham has also promised to speak to Local Government minister Eric Pickles about Norfolk County Council picking up part of Cory Wheelabrator’s bill for the forthcoming public inquiry.
Last week, the Lynn News revealed that Cory has agreed to meet its costs up to a “five-figure sum” with the council paying 90 per cent of the rest above that.
A spokesman for the developer told the Lynn News that this was “a standard position for a UK procurement project.”
This comment was made a week before Chancellor George Osborne announced that the “age of austerity” was going to continue.
Mr Bellingham said this is part of a wider policy issue and should be raised.
He said: “I will be raising this with the minister as a mater of urgency.
“It makes a mockery of the public inquiry.
“It beggars belief that the council tax payer will have to pick up the legal costs for a wealthy consortium.
“I will be raising it in the House.
“I am going to write to ask for an adjournment debate on this.”
People fighting against the Saddlebow burner are angry that the public purse is being used in this way.
Leading anti-incinerator campaigner Mike Knights has welcomed Mr Bellingham’s involvement.
Mr Knights said: “How can it be justified when people are accepting a cut in their standard of living?
“This company, which is part of a corporate giant is big enough to look after their costs.
“It is unforgiveable that public officials at the county council are frittering away vast sums of public money on things like this.”
