KING’S LYNN: Majestic plans to become a multiplex
Lynn could be getting a multiplex cinema if a “seven figure” project is given the green light.
The Majestic Cinema is hoping to double the number of its screens along with refurbishing the historic building in Tower Street.
Owner Paul Jervis is looking to extend the cinema building onto St James Court Car Park to help regenerate Lynn town centre, if the move is given the go-ahead by planners at West Norfolk Council.
He says the bid could create an extra 10 to 12 jobs and allow the screening of art house movies and live operas.
Mr Jervis, who purchased the cinema in 2003, said: “We wanted to expand to regenerate the town centre.
“The Majestic is coping very nicely, we are playing 98 per cent of the major film releases.
“It is a very exciting project.”
The cinema currently has three screens which can seat a total of 616 people but this could rise to 901 if the bid for three extra screens is approved.
The car park has a total of 61 spaces and is owned by the council.
Mr Jervis says he is still holding talks with the council over the car park.
The planning application states that the current foyer will remain as the main entrance and a link will be created to the new extension, which could be built onto the back.
The extension will hold ticket collection and refreshment points.
The Majestic opened in 1928 and Mr Jervis is planning to refurbish sections.
He said: “This extension helps us to preserve it.
“We are going to do a lot of work to the clock tower and tie it in to building the extension and we aim to do the cinema proud.”
The cinema currently employs 28 people.
