KING’S LYNN: MP Truss tackles minister over Marham
The MP representing Marham has written to the Defence Secretary pressing him to make a decision quickly on the location of the RAF’s new Joint Strike Fighter.
Elizabeth Truss, MP for South West Norfolk, has pressed the minister Philip Hammond on whether weekend reports that the JSF is to be based in Lossiemouth, Scotland, rather than RAF Marham were true.
She has request a meeting with Andrew Robatham, the defence minister responsible for the deployment of JSF, so a delegation of Norfolk MPs can press Marham’s strong case.
Ms Truss said: “It is disappointing that there is no further update on the RAF basing. I am maintaining the pressure on the Ministry of Defence to ensure the JSF is located at RAF Marham. The Secretary of State can be in no doubt of the support that Marham enjoys locally in Norfolk. In fact his announcement about the long term future of Swanton Morley barracks will be warmly welcomed across the county. However the economic value and strategic importance of RAF Marham to the region is substantial and local businesses, councils, residents, service personnel all want to know what the future will hold.”
