The Showmen’s Guild became the latest supporter of Red Wellies – The Lisa Wiles Brain Tumour Support Fund when it presented the charity with a £200 cheque after the opening of Lynn Mart.

Thursday’s presentation to Red Wellies treasurer Mervyn Wiles, Lisa’s father, took place at a reception given by the showmen at the Duke’s Head Hotel in the town.

John Thurston, chairman of the Norwich and Eastern Counties section of the guild, was accompanied by his vice-chairman Perry Day, guild president David Wallis and Mart chief steward Donald Gray as he handed over the cheque.

Mr Thurston said the guild had been approached “at the 11th hour” for help and was happy to make a donation to this local charity and to assist it in making more people aware of its fundraising work.

Throughout the Mart, the Red Wellies banner will be on display at the Aqua Boats children’s ride and its posters will be on display at many of the stalls and attractions. Collections are also being made around the fairground for the charity.

Mr Gray said a children’s ride will be staying on the Tuesday Market Place on February 25 and 26, after the main Mart has left, and the money taken on those days will also be donated to Red Wellies.

Mr Wiles, whose daughter Lisa, 43, a mother-of-three from Blackborough End, lost her battle against an aggressive brain tumour in October 2011, said: “I would really like to thank the Showmen’s Guild and all concerned for backing us, especially at short notice.

“I am so pleased to meet these guys – they are really genuine and it’s nice to be involved with them. We would love to retain our connection with them.”
