KING’S LYNN: Society sets sail for a musical milestone

Hoist the main sail and steady those sealegs, as the West Norfolk Gilbert and Sullivan Society prepare to stage their 60th anniversary production, HMS Pinafore and Trial by Jury.

Looking forward to this year’s performance is founder and president of the group, Kenneth Dearden, 91, who has previously starred in several productions of both shows.

He said: “The society is proud to still be presenting Gilbert and Sullivan performances of a truly professional standard.

“This year, we are one of three amateur groups in Lynn to be staging their show at the Corn Exchange and we ask that you continue to support us so that we can in turn continue to use it as our venue of choice.”

Award-winning director, Andrew Nicklin, who also staged the group’s 50th anniversary performance of The Mikado, is back with seasoned cast favourites taking the lead roles.

Under his direction, the show will be given a fresh take - the British naval liner cruising the waters of the Caribbean while a comical story of life, love and confusion is brought into the 1920s.

Complaints from the ranks that their military leaders lack knowledge and experience is nothing new, but who would seek help from their sisters, cousins and aunts?

A judge with a jury might be able to sort matters out.

The first act of HMS Pinafore will be followed by an entire performance of Trial By Jury, with a special soprano performance by Denise Bridge.

Bringing a little extra nautical flavour to the production, the Vancouver Sea Cadets, who are based in Lynn, have also agreed to test their acting skills by taking on roles in the performance.

The show opens at Lynn’s Corn Exchange on February 6, with four evening performances at 7.30pm and a matinee performance on the Saturday at 2pm.

Those celebrating their Diamond Wedding this year should contact Ros Ridley on 01553 674715 for the chance to win two tickets to the show.

To book tickets, contact the Corn Exchange Box Office on 01553 764864.
